Electric Fence

Almost forgot ....lineman r some of the nicest guys youll ever meet so the nxt tim you see a telephone ,power or cable lineman stop and ask em for a 15' of 6 solid and a handful of weavers and split bolts!!! they'll probably jist givem 2 ya /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
i know i would we've got bins full of em...2 more things ...clean all yer connections with emery cloth and as far as yer tail ends of mainline wire ...youll git the best connections if you take the galvanizing off right down 2 bare steel...electricians usually have a bunch of connectors 2!!!
as far as the 2 wires needing 2 be touched at the same time thats not true....depending on the ground salt ,clay and water content the extra grounds round the property will give u less impedance or ohms or resistance everywhere u go ...the hot wires must also (bottom ) especially...be clear of grass and all conductive growth...ive found out in the back 40 even a sapling branch on the wire can significantly reduce yer shock value /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Especially when its dry...i'm not sayin that if anything touches both wires hes not gonnna git nailed harder...itll knockem on his rear..blv me u... ive watched my horse reach between the wires to get to the greenest of grass and it sounds like a bull whip crackin when he hits d wire ...u wanna c a horse run!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
one very important thing 2 know ...if yer horse isnt electric fence trained and he gits his head thru the wires and gits it on the neck or behind the ears...hes not backin up hes goin thru yer fence!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION!!!!
Iput a coffee can of sweet feed down in various places when they first git in the pasture every spring..some insid the wire some under and some he cant git 2 without hittin d wire.....some may say this is extreme but i can shoot a gun off nxt 2 my boys and they'll never run into the fence im gone a lot and i dont wanna have 2 git a call sayin theyre down the road in the neighbors garden!!!!!!!!! oh yeah ..I also mow round the whole perimeter so theyll keep ther liddl heads in ..u no the old addage bout the grass always bein greener on the other side of the fence /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif If u ask me I personally think a farmer came up wit dat piece of witdom /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

take care ...TODD

OK
As I said above to get any "benefit" from that type of system you have to touch a hot and ground. The fence will work just like a regular fence if only the hot is touched. The problem is if you do not have enough wires they can get there head through as you said and are gone. When you have sheep or small animals you usually have at least 5 wires so they can't normally get their head through without touching 2 wires. For my cattle I can get away in most places with 3 wires but they all have to be live or the cattle in short time will figure out the ground and be out, probably by accident. If I was to go with ground on the post I would have to run 5 wires to be safe which in most areas would be more work and overkill. The downfall is my ground rod is a mile away and if the ground is dry you get a lot less shock.I would think if you have to run 5 wires having 2 of them grounded is the best system and just put a ground rod in every so often preferably in the wet areas and make sure that they don't ground out against the live wires. This should give you superior shock to most all of your fence
