If you've got a halfway decent amount of logs to move, buy a skidding winch. I have a Farmi 351. Absolutely LOVE it. Can't say enough how great it is. If it was stolen tomorrow I'd order a new one. They're not cheap, but they're worth every penny. The Norse winches from Labonville are the lowest cost brand and seem to be very good. Seriously, worth the money. I'd never consider using an electric winch for logs. Too slow, poor duty cycle, and too much strain on the charging system of the tractor.

PS: you can probably buy a new skidding winch, use it for 20 years and sell it for almost what your paid for it.
This is good advice. I keep my eyes open for a used one, but they do not show up often.

Thanks Motown.

I did a little looking and that certainly seems like the best long term solution. Being I can't find a lot of info on pricing for them, I suspect that goes to the "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" :)

I have sent an email to them for a dealer in my location so I can get some more info.

I was hoping a 7-9000 lb electric winch would work as it certainly seemed like the least expensive way out and was just looking to see if anyone had feedback on using them. I'm guessing not many folks go that route due to the previous comments (duty cycle, slowness, etc.).

The farmis are probably in the $3-5k range. The Norse are more like $2500-4000. Again, worth it. So worth it.

Now I need to find the thread on convincing my loving wife how the >$20 tractor was just a foundation that I need to build on. LOL

Buying just a tractor to take care of land is like buying your wife just an electric motor for use in the kitchen.

When would you use an electric winch over a skidding winch for logging?

I just bought an L3901 TLB. I'm waiting on the dealer to receive a grapple and was planning to sign for that in the next few days. My plan was to buy a skidding winch and move the logs with the grapple. Is there a case for an electric winch?

By the sounds of the feedback so far, no, not much of a case for an electric winch. If you are getting a skidding winch, that sounds about to be the best thing to do. Jealous.... :)

For now I will go with snatch blocks and rope to get the logs up to the trails where I will handle with the tractor from there. Then go after a skidding winch when I can (after a grapple) :)

No need to be jealous just yet ; ) Skidding winch won't be in the budget for another year. And, my wife has got me on so many other projects that I probably won't have time for one for at least that long.

Keep us posted on how whatever setup you choose works out for you. Good luck!
