The actual connections for 220/240 isn't a big deal.. 120 + 120= 240 volts...
Choosing the right size breaker and wire is the challenging part..

Any thoughts on the PTO Generator for on site welding and so on?

Rewire your welder plug to fit the generator and buy the same plug configuration for the shop receptacle. That way you won't need a pigtail adapter.
