When I turn the key to the "on" position I don't get any dash lights and no cranking of the starter when I turn the key to "start". When I first started having the issue I was at least getting dash lights, but now nothing. I've replaced the battery, rebuilt the starter, replaced the ignition switch, checked the wiring for wear and checked the fuses. I used the multimeter to check voltage from the battery, to the starter, after the fusible link and at the ignition, it reads 12.5v consistently at all points. The only things I haven't replaced are the voltage regulator and the wiring. Before I spend the $80ish on a voltage regulator, and possibly spending the time to run all new wires, is there anything else I should check that might be causing this problem?

You really need a schematic for your tractor. This one for a YM240 may be close enough to help. Check everything.

Thank you for the link. I was able to find the wiring diagram in a manual that I bought from Hoye Tractor. From what I can tell the issue could be related to clutch safety switch and/or the voltage regulator. The instrument panel lamp circuit seems to go through the regulator and the headlight switch, but the starter doesn't seem to rely on the regulator but goes through the clutch safety switch. Can I bypass the clutch safety switch to troubleshoot and eliminate one or the other?

I bypassed the clutch safety switch without any change. Did some additional testing and managed to get the dash lights on even though I didn't really change anything. Once the lights came on I honked the horn and after the second honk the lights died and the horn didn't work anymore. So I put the multimeter on the ignition and found that with the key off I registered 12.5v, turned the key to accessory, dash lights came on, and the meter registered 9.3v. Attempted to start the motor and the meter dropped to 0v. Weird. I checked the battery charge and it was about 50% so I put the charger on. No change after the battery finished. Since I can't start the motor, how can I check the voltage regulator? Does it even sound like this could be the regulator? I hate to say that I'm stumped, but I'm stumped.

A first good step is to check the ground cable and connections. The ground on the battery lead on mine seems especially touchy. I assume you cleaned the terminals when you changed the battery.

I replaced the battery and battery cables. It's a little late tonight, but I'll check the battery ground next time I have an opportunity to work on it. Is there another ground somewhere in system that could be a problem? Do these symptoms describe a short or grounding issue somewhere?

Bad grounds is the culprit in many electrical problems. When you replaces the ground cable did you clean the frame grounding surface real good?

The entire tractor is/should be a continuous ground. Run starter cables from the batt. connecters directly to the starter case and pos terminal and see if it starts/turns over. Had an old car once with unknown ground problems. Ran braided ground strap in various places until I solved/bypassed the problem.
No one can tell you what your problem is but you can bet it's not the voltage regulator. It's not even used for starting.

hahaha!!!

I would bet you have a bad battery mostlikely. Registering voltage and then a massive drop while cranking is one sign of a bad battery. When we bought our used Toyota highlander it had a brand new battery put in at the dealer before we bought it. a month later it was bad. And this was a Panasonic battery from Toyota!!! The things can just all of a sudden go out sometimes.

The battery was one of the first things he threw at it. Same problem.

Had Battery problems a few months back on a 07 Lariat. The repair shop that put it in swore the battery was good and the Veh. had a electrical problem. They stated it could be Big $ to find it and correct the problem. The previouse owner's son had a upgrade on the stereo so they had the shop that installed it checked for problems and they claimed every thing was in Ex. working order. The owner had me go help pick it up and sure enough it wouldn't start. Jumped it and off to the Dealer it went. In or around about 3-4 days later it was ready to pick up. When asked if they found the prob. they replied yes it was the Battery!!!

Thanks everyone for your input and for preventing me from spending several hundred dollars on parts I don't need. I cleaned and re-tightened the chassis ground wire from the negative battery terminal and my old Yanmar is running like a champ again! I forgot my own troubleshooting advice, do the simplest things first. Thanks again.
