I just saw that the Tool Warehouse is offering electronic safety earmuffs for $23.65!

Ear muffs

I have NO CLUE as to wether they are worth a thing, but for that kinda chump change, they may be worth a look!

I bought a set of electric earmuffs on e-bay for about $50.- dollars. They work good when they are turned off they amplify great. They don't seem to do too well for sound reduction when they are on. I think they were from peltier or shooters imporium. David.

Do they have a built in FM radio, or are they the electronic noise canceling type?

From the Tool Warehouse site:

Astro Pneumatic 7660
Electronic Safety Earmuffs

• LED power indicator.
• On/Off switch with volume control.
• Solid-state circuit.
• Built-in microphone amplifies low level sound.
• Eliminates noise over 85db
• Comfortable ear cushions and headband
• Powered by 2 AA batteries.

- no Radio
- sounds like Adaptive Noise Reduction.

I have an Aero Peltor Noise cancelling headset - these look a lot like cheap knockoffs, and I don't know that I wouldn't still pay the ~$150 for the Peltors...

I had a set of muffs "like" them before. What they are is nothing but Muffs. Really nothing great about them. This is how they work. They work like any muffs out there with out batteries installed, the reason for the batteries is for the mic to pick up sounds like talking and so on (so to hear someone you don't have to pull the muff from your ear), then when there is a noise over the 85db the mic will "turn off". I could be wrong with my understanding. In other words get yourself a good pair of muffs or even a pair with a radio in them. lol with a radio you are putting the battery to good use IMO.

I would want something that begins to eliminate lower than 85db. That's a level a little too high to avoid ear damage.

As Mr Steve said - these are NOT ACTIVE Noise cancelling muffs. They are standard muffs with mics in them, so that when you stop the loud noise (tractor) - you don't have to take the muffs off to listen to the birds or your spouse talking to you.

Quiet - they amplify ambient sounds to overcome the muff
Noisy - mic turns off and they are plain old muffs.

Typically these only have 20-22dB noise redunction. Get a good pair of plain muffs (28-29dB) and take them off when you're trying to listen. Your wallet will be further ahead, and yours ears will be too.

Peltor and several other companies make manual push on push off listening muffs that are probably a much better solution than these.
