Since joining this forum, email notifications have worked as intended, but since roughly last week the notifications have gone from once per new post (until you visit that thread) to every single post in every subscribed thread. My inbox is getting absolutely flooded!

vBulletin is not coded to do this, so TBN coders have messed up the code. The vB email reads:

There may also be other replies, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the forum again.

This was the case until last week, but now I get every posting no matter when I visit the forum. I'd hate to have to unsubscribe to every thread, but I can't even read my email anymore with all of this SPAM going on, now.

This is a serious issue and one I bet is completely clogging the crap out of the TBN outgoing mail server. I bet the email admin is thinking this forum suddenly became Facebook in popularity.

Time to roll back those changes, boys. You've created a fire hazard with all of that mail. :confused2:

I checked your account and you have 133 subscribed threads with almost all of them set to instant e-mail notification. This setting will e-mail you every time there is a reply to the thread. So, the system is working correctly.

If you want to change the settings, go to http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/subscription.php?do=viewsubscription and you can bulk update your subscription status to daily e-mail or no e-mail notification.

Prior to last week we were running a modified e-mail notification system that was designed to increase delivery to our members who were not getting the notifications. But last week we went back to the default vbulletin system. So perhaps before last week it wasn't working properly, but now it is. I've tested it several times and the notifications are working properly.

Well, the timing is right at least.

Are new instant emails sent out when the forum, anywhere on the forum, is visited, or just when the thread itself is visited?

I've never been subscribed to a really busy thread before this past week or so, so it's possible I just noticed it happening by happenstance. I first noticed it happening while reading a thread, yet I kept getting new notifications for new posts for a different thread. It may be the email server was behind and it just appeared to be new notifications while I wasn't reading the thread.

Lesson to learn.. no more subscribing to busy threads while still using the forum for other reading.

Any chance of modifying the script to only send out new post notifications if the thread is visited, not the forum as a whole? Again, this may already be the case and the email server was just behind.

I know the DB stores the last read of each user, but querying that data may be a looping full scan of epic proportions. Been years since I've messed with vB, so I can't say offhand how easy it would be to change.

Either way, email notifications is most definitely working.

I think it happens when you just visit the site. What I've noticed, at least.
