You've gotten pretty good explainations about the gibberish so I won't go into that. As far as the seemingly blank e-mails, they're not really blank. Most of them contain a "web gif" which is a 1 pixel html picture. When you open the e-mail it loads the .gif from the website and viola the sender knows that your e-mail addy is real. They can then really start sending you spam and selling your "confirmed" address. To stop this turn off html graphics in your emails.
