I have a few people that work for themselves that actually answer the phone and then show up when they said they would BUT, most of them don't show up at all period.. They work for themselves, do a big enough job to get through the winter and then drink beer the rest of the year.

Most of them could never hold down a real job hence why they work for themselves.. Most of them have no health insurance so we pay if the family gets sick and you know they will, no retirement to speak of, most of them around here are lazy drunks..

Jeez... sounds like you deal with a lot of white trash. I would advise to up your game and work with PROFESSIONALS... BUT, they cost money and aren't cheap. Maybe you've been getting what you pay for...

Actually, a lot of people could never handle the responsibility of working for themselves. People that work paycheque to paycheque could never finance a job or provide warranty. Part of the reason, there can be trouble with small contractors when things go wrong. No place to pass the buck when you are self employed.

So, where do you find PROFESSIONALS in the rural area? There are one or two, but finding them is a challenge. They don't advertise - all word of mouth. I've tried to bring them in from the city and pay them for their commute, but they're not interested.

This shortage of people in many trade has taken years to create and take many more years to resolve.

Decades ago society and education system started the idea that every kid should go to college. Along with the focus in to computers, technology fields as place to make lots of money. We are seeing the results of less kids going to physical trades.

The average age of electricians is currently 55. Given another decade with current trends the electricians, plumbers, etc will be making more then doctors and engineers.

I’m just about doing that right now. We charge $95.00 per hour and there are companies charging more than me.

Problem on my end is the younger people coming into the trades do not want to work. I have never seen so many lazy people. I actually had one 1st year employee tell me to dig the trench when I asked him to clean out the trench behind the excavator. He got his final check that day. This is why I no longer have ANY employees. Was not worth the headache

The problem is that it is equally as hard to hire a software programmer as it is to hire a machinist; I hire both for my company. Along with too many kids not picking trades, I think that too many are encouraged to pick majors in college that do not satisfy a societal need, or they drop out and are equipped to do nothing.

They've been told that they have to get a college degree and they'll make lots of money. Oh, really? Just what kind of high paying job are you going to get in Music Appreciation? And there are many more degrees that have been created just to make the kids happy and feel good. I think colleges have changed from teaching to selling a meaningless piece of paper. The colleges have increased their fees astronomically since kids can get loans now, so more money is floating around and the colleges are promoting irresponsibility by encouraging kids to take loans out for something that is of no value to them.

And during High School graduation ceremony it is announced what each one is going to do next, except they are not allowed to say they are going into the trades. They hand a teacher a piece of paper that has that info on it and I know of a couple of cases where the kid was going into a well paying trade and already had a job, but the teacher ignored that and announced they were going on to college.

I'm building a house now and needed some siding. Called three different lumberyards that all carry LP products. All said they would find out the cost and let me know. A month later I haven't heard a peep from any of them. Ended up buying at Lowe's. Bundled it with some other stuff, got a custom quote, and purchased. They were great to deal with. It was about $2k worth of siding.

Brother-in-law went to college (seminary) to be a Preacher. His favorite courses were Golf and Bait-Casting.

I was just on a project in Florida for 6 weeks. Came across a young man of 22 who worked like a dog for one of my subs. I watched him for two weeks and then pulled him aside and had "a talk". I told him when he was ready for a change, wanted to learn more and master his craft, to call me. These kind of guys are few and far between. I also offered him three times what he is making now and the promise of more when he turns the corner to being able to run jobs.
