Well the dreaded Emerald Ash Borer has been found just about 8 miles from my place. The State has restricted the transport of wood from this county and the adjoining county. I can understand some restrictions but this one makes no sense.

No Ash can be move out of these 2 counties, saw logs can be transported but no Ash saw logs. "OK" that makes sense.

The rule also said that NO firewood can be transported out of the county. Now why in the world can I transport a maple saw log but if I cut and split it into firewood, I can't transport it.

I've got to believe these rules are designed by idiots.

I live in a tourist area adjacent to a big city that is infected. I know that people are going to bring free firewood along on vacation. This bug will change the look of my county.
As for the rules, I guess they are just dumbing it down for those who can't identify wood.

agree, the people looking at saw logs are going to know what their looking at and understand these issues. People buying and even a lot selling firewood have no idea what they have:(

I think you will find the saw logs might have to be kiln dried after they are sawn.

Nothing in the rules that I saw required kiln drying. Also a sawlog only has to be 4"6" long. I guess I'll just cut them 5' load them into the back of the truck and move them that way. The neighbors will just have to listen to the chainsaw.

We have had these rules in MI for years. About the only place it is policed is on the mackinaw bridge. We have virtually no ash trees left and most of the elm have died too. Presently have some disease that is killing the oak trees. Up north there have been entire forests wiped out by beetle. The woods are not in a good way here.

All the Ash, Elm and some Pine trees have been hit by one disease or another. All the rules about transporting wood have not helped.
If some disease that kills Maples shows up. I will have only locally grown pine trees left on my property.

Another sad story. The only real hardwood on my place is ash :(

It seems that all these pests have come over here in wood used in pallets from China according to the government. My question to the state Department of Environmental Conservation was Why doesn't the federal Agracultural department require items shipped into this country to come in on treated pallets?

According to one friend who ships his products to Europe, everything he ships has to be sent on pallets of treated wood.

I have to disagree to a point with this statement $$$ speak louder then most anything. I have seen what some of these so called "loggers" can do! I have also seen what a concerned self employed fire wood supplier will do. Loggers go into an area strip it and leave{go onto the next job}. The fire wood guy may stay in an area for years. In the end some folks are going to do whatever to earn the new GOD $$$$$$$$$$$
