Hi:

Being new to rural living and having always had an emergency vet within a half hour drive I am now looking to find out what people do when there are no vets near by? I own a couple of dogs and will probably add another and maybe some livestock, but looking for what people do when there is an emergency should your dog or livestock need it.

Thanks,

Larry

Have a backup vet, and a backup for the backup.

As JJT said, also get to know your vet.

Ask around, talk to your neighbors or ask at the local grocery store, they'll tell you who is well liked in the area. Also know that vets in the country will come out to your place usually depending on the type animal involved, of course there is a "ranch fee" for that service.

its good to get to know your nearest vet very well and are confident that he will come in the middle of the night if needed, and it does not hurt to know the basics and emergency procedures with the livestock that you have.

This is exactly the way we had to do it. Talking to the neighbors and the folks that lived around here. We also asked at the grocery store and local stores we deal with. It's the very best information we could find. That's what everyone does here.

In farming areas, vets often have 24 hour emergency service, and will do farm calls. Our vet's farm calls extend beyond our livestock and include our dogs and cats. In an emergency we can either meet her at her animal hospital, or if we can't, she'll come to us. That's pretty typical in farm country.

Our vet is the same. She will come in an emergency 24/7. It takes her about 30 minutes to get here. We have only had to call her twice. It's expensive but much cheaper than losing a $4,000 horse.

I would check for a 24/7 Emergency Pet Clinic in Tucson for house pets or anything you can transport and they will treat. For serious, life-threatening injury or illness, it's possible that is where a local vet would send you anyways. That's the way it works here, I suppose it varies.
Dave.

you learn to treat it yourself or put the animal down if its "emergency". the reality is, thats part of rural living/farm life.
