Emergency Pet Treatment

   / Emergency Pet Treatment #21
Honestly if one of my pets get cancer or something I will have it put down. I am not going to prolong their life when they get like that. Of course that's just the difference in people I'm sure. I grew up back when that was what was done. I can't see spending the large sums of money and put the animal through all that suffering.

Just because a critter has cancer does not mean that one has to spend lots of money to keep them alive or to keep them alive with a decent quality of life for a period of time.

The vet's found that Chase had cancer for the second time and that it had spread doing surgery for a growth we had felt. They said she might live 3-4 months. Do you want us to just turn the knob and put her down or sew her up and send her home.

She went home and lived 6 months. I am sure we spent a small sum of money for meds but not a bunch. And she was worth every dang cent.

When it was time to put her to sleep she let us know. The vet came to the house and did it. My dog Kelly howled when Chase's heart stopped beating. Kelly nosed Chases body and knew Chase was gone. One of Kelly's nickname was The Nose. She always put that nose in places. :D

My nickname for Chase was Lady because she was a Lady. :D

She was worth the itty bit of money we spent on her. And it was worth having her around for 6 more months.

Chase and Kelly are both gone now. They were far more intelligent, caring and worthwhile than many people I have known. They never hurt anyone, just gave loyalty and love for some water, food and meds. Cheap they was.

There are after hour vets to call and there is an excellent 24 hour animal hospital 30 minutes away. And I do mean "animal hospital." It is expensive but we have gotten better care for our dogs there than we have received from human MDs for us.

Dan,

Fortunately, we haven't needed much in the way of medical care, but the animal hospital we have taken our dogs to does a great job. Should I need it, like you, I would like to get that level of care too :D

Our area animal hospital serves the region, and because it is there, local vets don't worry as much about being on call 24/7 for dogs and cats. Some vets rotate through the staffing I think. I am okay with that.

I think it's good to always be aware that little pet health problems can become big emergencies if they are not noticed and attended to promptly. Then there are things like a face and mouth full of porcupine quills, or a twisted stomach that just happen and need to get fixed right away. For the stomach, you have about 1 hour or less before death.
Dave.

Our vet is wonderful. She handles large and small animals. Part of her week is traveling to farms to see animals and the other is office. She also has an emergency number. I have referred many people to her and they all say she is the best vet they have come across.
