Well it is repaired. The plumber was really great and I thanked him for not laughing at my efforts. He said you have to try and he might have put a rubber tube and clamps on it, but it would have been very temporary. Took about 90 minutes, but a lot of that was the 1/4 mile trip back and forth to the meter and waiting for the glue to set. He said the valve required a complete rotation, not just a quarter turn. So that is good to know.
He also was very efficient. He didn't disassemble more than needed. He was very careful about cleaning the pipe. I'll definitely call this company again. (OK, it might change when I see the final bill, but I don't think so.)
My wife asked if I wished I had done it myself. Of course I do, but am also glad it is fixed. Haven't decided if I need to retire from plumbing. I think I will move the pump to the basement in the spring or summer. I'm at least going to get an estimate.
Lessons learned include knowing how to turn the water off. I thought I did, but had never tested it. Plastic is less forgiving than metal (I already knew that, but seem to have forgotten).
Thanks for all the suggestions, comments, encouragement and warnings.
