End of mowing season

/ End of mowing season #11
Oh boy here come the leaves and I get to hook up another impliment. I have an AgFab Vacuum/Hammermill and man is is fun when the leaves really get built up. Last year we had a blast with it. Has about an 8" sucker hose attachment that is wild. Grinds the leaves up into coffee ground sized pieces. I pile the output up and by spring it's black humus ready to put on the garden and flowerbeds.

I'm sick of mowing!

DrDan,

What was the cost of your outside vacuum cleaner? I'm afraid to ask. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

DrDan-
Is it pto driven? If not, does anyone know of one that is? I don't need yet another small engine to maintain, esp. one that will sit for close to a year.

I'll cut into mid November. Because of the nearby Great Lake, the grass actually grows more now than in Sept. and Aug. The grass is very thick and green now. Last week I core aerated and might do it once more.

TRAC-VAC make some PTO models. I like the way they work, but make sure you have the HP to run it. I have a JD 4300 HST and it does OK. a 4200 did not have the power.

It must be a pretty serious machine. One of my thoughts was: with the pto driven machine, you could easily adjust the speed to avoid picking up rocks from the gravel driveway. Do you agree, or is it better to do this with the height adjustment ? Thanks for the info.

I believe it was about $1300 I forget - I've had it a couple of years. It also hooks to the mower deck and sucks up the grass clippings when you hit that time of the year when the grass is growing to fast to keep up with it. It also takes branches up to about 2" easily in a separate chute. Good machine! With a 10HP directly coupled to a hammermill I had to put on an electric start (not enough poop in this old guys drawers). LOL And of course since I a gimp, I had to be able to run the whole rig from the tractor seat, so....

I had a hydraulic dump put on the wagon that catches the output. It is a breeze now.

If there is interest, I'll post pictures.

Anybody done for the season already? What's the latest you've cut?

We cut year round these parts. Slows to about once a month during winter. Warm springs it needs it about twice a week .. It has been close to a month now and the grass is noticably in need of cutting, but given the choice of grading the back yard with the tractor or pushing the mower, guess what gets done in the remaining work days before rain :)
