Energy Hyd. Valve Question

Hi All,

I blew out an o-ring in a energy hydraulic valve I have on my log splitter, so I got a new o-ring and started to take off the spring detent cover and proceeded to unscrew the spring detention assembly and finally was able to remove and replace the blown o-ring.

I put it back together and tested.

It doesnt appear to be allowing me to retract the splitter, nor can i get it to "snap" into place (this is where the lever sticks and automatically stops when the splitter cylinder has retracted all the way; spring detention I believe).

Any ideas what I did wrong? Could it be an issue further into the valve? I stopped without removing the entire "rod" that was attached to the lever, should I take it apart all the way and replace all the rubber inside?

Could I have not put the spring detention ball bearings (4 small and 1 large) back in correctly?

Anyone familiar with this PLEASE help I live in rural MT and dont want to find a place that will fix it for the manufacturer.

Pictures can be taken if that will assist anyone!

I think that is the problem.

The end of the spring det assembly there are four holes in the rod, n/s/e/w, in these holes go the small ball bearings. The big one goes in between them. Then the 1 sleeve and then the thicker sleeve, that has 2 indentations on the inside that the small BB's fit into, and finally the spring det. cap goes on, am I missing something else?

I was just thinking, maybe I switched around the placement of the sleeves. 1 is just a spacer sleeve that goes around the spring det assembly, the other, as I said already, has the two indentations in it and is much thicker of a sleeve. Could I have put them on in the wrong order? I put the thin, spacer sleeve on first... Hmm.. thinking aloud.

Ps - I though I laid it out as I took it off, but I could have gotten something out of order I guess.

Pss - When I did this I wasnt aware there were BB's in their and they fell on the ground, I found 4 small and 1 large nothing more. Could there have been something else in there that fell out? I didnt see it but hey anything is possible.

PS - No one has a diagram that shows how the BB's should go. I have the "closed center" item that came with the log splitter for closed hyd systems and it has directions with it, but no mention of BB's anywhere. I also reviewed the Energy Mfg website and they had some basic schematic stuff in PDF but nothing mentioned/showed BB's or their placement. :|

Yes, very frustrating I am sure.

The detent in my AUX valve uses a different design according to your description, but the sleeves you mention is a definite possibility. Wish I could help more

I have exactly the same problem with the energy valve on a Brave log splitter. I am sure it is an assembly problem but I can't get it right. You would think that somewhere on the Internet a drawing would be available. I just took the valve to the local small engine shop to see if he can fix it. If not I'm replacing it with a Prince valve from Northern Hydraulics.

Please do let me know if your local small engine shop was in fact able to fix. I have taken that **** thing apart and put it back together a dozen times and no matter what I do it will NOT go back.

PS - I was told by Speeco I can take it to a local small engine shop and they would pay for it but I do NOT want to take the valve off the splitter because it looks like it will be a real bear to get back on due to the way the two NPT's thread into the cylinder. I guess I could take the entire log splitter to them... It just doesn't make sense that it doesn't work after I have put it back together so many times.

PS - I was told by Speeco I can take it to a local small engine shop and they would pay for it but I do NOT want to take the valve off the splitter because it looks like it will be a real bear to get back on due to the way the two NPT's thread into the cylinder. I guess I could take the entire log splitter to them... It just doesn't make sense that it doesn't work after I have put it back together so many times.

Is this under warranty? Why don't you take it back where you bought it?

i Bought it at a tractor supply in Billings, that is 300 miles away from me, no way am I travelling 600 miles round trip to fix. Fuel alone will cost me an arm and a leg.

Well I picked it up, installed it, and it worked ok one way, would not work the other. Took it back and he reworked it, I put it back on, works ok both ways, but no detent and leaks bad around the cup on the end. I am tired of fooling with it and going to order a new valve. By the way I was just up to Lewistown to see my cousin. Where are you located?

yes it is... and it doesnt appear to be correct. I am beyond frustrated with this to be frank!

The big ball pushes against the round cap and that doesnt appear to be correct, however I am clueless as to another way to put it together.

Did you get any insight/lucky?

Me too, I'm just waiting for my new Prince valve to get here. I know in the future I would have serious doubts about buying a piece of equipment that had an Energy valve on it.

Welp, I called Speeco and they are sending a new valve, they dont currently offer anything but Energy valves but boy oh boy did I politely convey that those energy valves are crap. They didnt realize there were so many compliants about them and said they would consider changing to another manufacturer for their valves. At least they were responsive to my comments (and yours).

Speeco themselves are top notch from my dealings with them, so folks realize this is a Energy Manfacturing issue and not a Speeco issue.

Thanks for everyones assistance and thoughts on the matter.

PS - Even Speeco doesn't have a schematic that defines how the spring detention goes back together from Energy Mfg. so that aint good!

Good for you and good for Speeco for stepping up to the plate and replacing the valve, even if it is another Energy valve. I would still like to find the information to repair the valve just for my own satisfaction.

I did not, but I did go to there website, no information at all on repairing their products.

Energy does not post any parts drawings on its website. Utilize the contact link to contact them. Drawings are available once I can determine the valve iteration you have.
mrpanhead told me of this site and the bashing Energy is recieving. He was very grateful when I helped him solve his problem.

You know what they say, "you only get one chance to make a first impression". My first impression of Energy valves are they are junk. I have replaced it with a Prince valve that came with a detailed drawing and instruction sheet. Their Internet web site has parts manual, instruction sheet, and detailed drawings for most of their valves. This is the way you do business today. And by the way the Prince vale works perfectly.
