Just a follow up, the issue ended up being the heat strips were "programmed" to come on when the call for the heat pump to operate. Also had a faulty thermostat that might have been partly to blame. Problem fixed, saw the energy consumption drop an average of 20-25 kwh per day in normal "stand-by" mode, 30+ kwh when that space is being used. Whew...

I bought a small camp once with running well water, electricity from a plumber. After a year, my immediate neighbor who only rarely came for the weekend called me over and told me that the plumber who sold it to me had had a waterline run to his own camp a few hundred feet up the road. My submersible pump pumped the water, using the electricity I paid for! I mentioned this to the plumber and sheepishly he said, "oh you know about that." Then we worked out a timetable for him to have his own well dug.

It is always good to run these things down!
