Hello,
We have a JD 5203. We have recently noticed that when you engage the clutch (depress the pedal that engages the clutch) that there is a ticking sound. You can feel it.
We are wondering if something like a throw out bearing ia
going bad.

What is causing that ticking/clicking noise? The ticking noise is equal to the RPMS and you can feel it in your foot.

The tractor is working fine right now and we continue to use it.

Thanks,
Granny DP

There should be an inspection cover either on the side or on the bottom, if you remove that and shine a light in there it may tell you your answer.

I've never owned a JD tractor. On my MF tractors there are adjustments on the clutch pedal. Have you checked the free play in your clutch pedal? Is there any adjustment left? Sometimes adjusting the free play will get you some time. Depends on how worn stuff is. I would check that first. However, IME once you feel/hear the clicking on the clutch pedal you have to get into it and replace something.

I wonder how much trouble it would be to replace a clutch on a John Deer 5203? I just got a quote for $2500 to $3000.

That's the "I don't want to do it" price. Clutch is probably around $500-$650 for a good one. Probably about 8 hours to split it and put it back together @ $100 an hour that's around $1,400. I'd say a high estimate shouldn't be more than $1,800. Have you looked in the inspection cover hole yet? Adjusted it at all? Shouldn't be much trouble to do it, if you have the proper stuff to do it, jack stands and a floor jack is what we have put ours in with.
