I went out last night and played some plowing and that at around midnight. It was a least 9 below.

The tractor started but sputtered, started, caught and sputtered and then started, caught and was fine.

I was thinking a block heater might be a good idea to help save engine wear during cold starts.

I searched the forum and found a lot of people have those for other brands.
Anyhow know much about this topic from costs, to installs, etc.?

It is not necessary as the Kioti CK20 is doing great but I could plug it in where is it parked under an overhang outside.

Thanks.

Dan

First, measure your freeze plug hole diameter. Maybe 40mm or 45mm?
What size engine? 3cyl or 4.

Another and more simple option to install would be to get an in-line lower hose heater. Available at most auto parts stores they can easily be installed in about a half hour. I have mine plugged into a heavy duty appliance timer set to come on 2-3 hours before use. It preheats the coolant to about 140 deg.F and makes for easier starts.

Here is a selection of the in-line heaters at Tractor Parts Inc.

I also use the radiator hose inline version. Works great. I plug it in 45 minutes or an hour before snow blowing and the whole engine is warm to the touch when I go out to start it.:)

I fired my CK30hst up last night around 6 above. I have been using Rotella synthetic 5w-40. She turns over pretty easy. I just run the glow plugs preheat twice and no problem. You can't go wrong with a block heater but I'd rather use the heater hose version instead of knocking out a freeze plug. The above oil and start works for me so far.

Question, when you turn the key on for preheat do the injectors give the engine a shot of fuel at this point? This is my first diesel.
Thanks

not on mine. It just preheats the glow plugs.

Dan

i picked up a magnetic block heater for my ck20 by zeroStart for about 45 bucks..... i put it on the side of the oil pan under the frame for a couple of hours.... used it once so far (no snow to plow yet ) and it definitely helped... my machine sits outside in some fairly cold weather here in NH.....
