Tractor
Kubota B2601
I'm at 60 hours and completed my fluid changes.
My Question?
Is my machine really broken in?
She isn't blowing any smoke similiar to when delivered.
She's been garaged since day one. Today at 60... 'zero' smoke at start up.
What I'm concerned with? I never really put a LOAD on her.
I've only run the Backhoe and FED since day one putting about.
Not really any stress on the machine.
I'm thinking about taking her out today and putting a pull strap on her.
Use her to tow my 1 ton pick up my gravel and hilly road. Give her some WORK.
I don't know,, Is she broken in?
Should I worry?

What would that accomplish? What good do you think it will do to suddenly put a load on the tractor instead of simply using the machine normally?

My OEM manual says to load the engine during break in AND vary the RPM up and down, do not to run it full throttle continually but ok for occasional use. I broke my LS in by digging a pond with it using the FEL and box scraper which I continually loaded the engine when digging dirt and then unloaded it when travelling with the full FEL varying the engine RPM by using the foot throttle to increase the rpm from the 1900 throttle setting to WOT. It worked I suppose as it uses no oil.

I have done the same. Using the FEL and Backhoe at various RPM's.

Are we not only pressurizing the Hydraulics?

No strain on the motor to seat the rings etc.

Pulling around a 500lb Box Scrapper is good.. At least you're working the Engine.

Give the Tractor some work rScotty.
Stress her out a little.
****;
If you run a motor for ten years idling and then one day decide to put her to heavy work,,, It may be worse than kicking a kid out of Mom and Dads basement and forcing them to get a job for the first time.

Could get a heart attack after living the easy life for so long.

Hyd. and driving around can put plenty of load for break in, the more important part is keeping the rpm varied.
No need to load it unnecessarily.

FWIW- I never hear of any modern engine not seating rings. I would say at 60hrs you have probably already broken in the engine.

I put my (brand new) tractor right to work the day it got dropped off.
If it couldnt handle the first days work at full load, well then i simply bought the wrong tool for the job.

The key to it is, maintain your maintenance schedules, you`ll never have a problem with the machines ability.
That method has worked for me for 60yrs...!!! Never broke an engine to this day, so i must have done something right.

AGREED...!!!!

Hey, don't fret it, work it!
75 years ago due to sloppy machining break in was necessary but with today's CNC manufacturing that engine is at its best as it come out of the production line.
Today's engine is , like 'factory broke in'.
Just use it and don't abuse it.

Sooooooooooo totally agree with that statement. There are far better tolerances today... thats why i just putt`m right to work right from the get-go. And i ain`t blown an engine or transmission up yet, and i get MANY years of good service out of them.

For the OP:
Just an example, i have a JD420 that i bought brand new in 1989, i still run that very tractor today... it never rests, its always doin hard work and always has, and it shows its age, theres no paint left on the tractor anywhere. Last weekend, the throttle cable finally broke while my wife was mowing, and it was FOR THE FIRST TIME... $100 for a new one. Somewhere around 10yrs ago, i had to put an ignition switch in it. Its lived a VERY hard life from day one, never garaged, always sits outside in the weather and its still running. We still mow over 2 acres of lawn with it every summer, we still use the power angle blade all summer doing different projects, plowing the driveway in the winter. That JD dont owe me a dime. So, if this old JD420 garden tractor can work from day one at full load from 1989 year round, sit outdoors all its life, that kabota shouldn`t have any problems running wide open till you sell it, or trade it in. Git on it, run it like your stealing it.

Thanks for putting me at ease.
I've been varying the RPM's since day one.
Similar to everything I have ever owned with an engine.
I wasn't sure if 100% FEL and Backhoe work amounted to any type of engine break in.
Hey, If I'm worried so much about my 2601, why am I not worried about my 2012 Corvette?
My five year old Vette hasn't ever been taken above 4200 Rpms.
She Runs excellent.
At most,, 1/8 - 1/4 of a qt of oil used between 6k miles and seasonal oil changes.
No 7K Rpm teenager Burnouts for me. :)
I was thinking you need to put a Kubota Tractor to work. Work her hard... Pull and Drag Heavy every once in a while during break in.
