Engine Cleaning with Kero?

My old John Deere Model B's manual told you to flush the transmission with kerosene. I did what it said. Big mistake!!! All the old seals started to leak, maybe from all the gunk being cleaned off of them. From then on, I left well enough alone and just regularly changed the fluid.

Now I did that on my old "B" and had good results with the transmission. My problems came when I drained the globs of oil out of the engine and put in fresh, now it smokes like a chimney!

Just use good oil and change it before too long, can double the interval using synthetic. Only time I've used any kerosene at all is to pour some into the pan near the end of the drain to help get the last of the dark oil out.

Don't believe the ATF story. ATF is just 5w oil with very little to no additive in it.

If you change the oil regularly then you won't have sludge in the engine. If you bought an engine with sludge already in it then I'd just leave it there. No need to loosen all that gunk up and have it clog small oil passages.

ATF is far from free of additives.

It has more detergents/ chemicals in it than Tide.

I would have to agree with that. ATF is far from free of additives. It among other things has anti foam, viscosity index improvers, extreme pressure, detergents, dispersants additives to name a few. It is basically a very robust hydraulic/UTF type oil. Afterall a automatic transmission is a hydraulic pump operated system.

I dont care if you believe it or not I saw it. Cleanest engine I ever worked on. We pulled the valve covers, and if I remember correctly the intake manifold and all were very clean. the oil pump pick up screen needed cleaning out but the pump and tube were spotless. Probably would have been Dextron way back then but knowing my brother it was the cheapest ATF on the stores shelf.

I have flushed my engines out at times if I feel the oil was particularly dirty. I usually just add a few quarts of the specified oil and run it for a few minutes and drain the crankcase again. Another thing, I always change the oil with the engine warm, this allows for better draining. If your oil filters are not too expensive, try changing just the filter mid-way between your regular oil change interval. Then add enough oil to get back to the full mark.

an automatic transmission is a hydraulic transmission.

back when I first started working on buses, that is the term GM used for the 2 speed automatic tranny they built. Hydraulic transmission. I have always liked that term.

it requires hydraulic pressure to operate the clutches and lubricate its internals.

but its off topic other than to say modern ATF is a very good cleaning agent.

sometimes when I dont have GOJO handy, I use ATF to wash my hands. it disolves all kinds of gunk in no time.

ATF, mixed with STP engine treatmant (the honey-like stuff), makes an excellent all-around lube. I use it on all my firearms, hinges, linkages, etc.
My dad and grandpa swore by a product called Rislone, substituting one quart of oil at change time. They said they saw less gunk buildup around the rocker assemblies when changing lifters/pushrods. I'm thinking of trying it out in my Cummins p/u.
