I put the O. E. block heater in our Kubota, and someone told me to unplug it before starting or it could be damaged. That doesn't make any sense to me. Does anyone know what the facts are, here?

If the coolant is low there could be an air pocket pulled through the system. Most of those heating elements will burn out if not in the coolant when heating. They are designed to be wet when plugged in.

Well ???-- There could a problem. One forgetts the cord is still plugged in and drive away. People use various means of looping cords in obvious places to avoid this problem.

The magnetic heater will be the quickest and easiest to install, but as others have said, some sort of coolant heater is best.
Back when I was growing up, there was a long cold spell that lasted a while being below 0º, nothing on the place would start, my dad had used the white gas camping stove under one of the vehicles until it was warm enough to start. Amazing what multi weight oil, fuel injection and better battery technology does in the cold.
I know that open flames, oil, gasoline/diesel fuel and other flammable materials are very dangerous together, and I am not recommending doing this, but it did work.

Put mine on a couple of weeks ago. Bought a lower hose heater from Napa auto parts and it works well. I woke up to 4 degrees and the tractor block was @ 100 degrees and holding. This thing only uses 375 watts. I have a magnettic heater that is 400 watts that doesn't work nearly as well. Be carefull about the hose size, my little Yanmar uses a 1 1/16" dia hose fitting on a YM 3000, 1 1/4" is way to large for their lower hose. Now it starts in less than 1 turn of the starter.
