Change twice a year and use the block heater.

The 5w40 oil will have a higher viscosity at starting temperature than at running temperature and give you better starting in the cold. Why not use it year round?

I use 5w30 in my 4010. That's what the chart says to use.

Mobil 1 is clearly diesel rated. I'm using it in my 240D Benz and changing once/year instead of twice/year with dino oil. In it, I use 5w40 because Benz recommended 10w40 back in 1983 for it and I KNOW that the 5w40 is heavier at start than at running temperature anyway. Many Mercedes Club members are using Mobil 1 in their diesels. The main thing you have to watch is soot buildup. That's why you can't run Mobil 1 to 15,000 miles like in gasoline engined cars, but I figure it's good for 6,000 miles because even the dino oils were rated for up to 5,000 miles on my Benz.

I worked 31 years for Exxon as a lubricating oil process engineer. Have calculated oil viscosities many many times and have written computer programs to compute such. Your 5wxxx oil will be HEAVIER at starting temperature than at running temperature, guaranteed. So, it's silly to switch to 15w40 for the summer.

Yes Ralph, that is what I said to, except you explained it a lot more and better. He says he only puts about 50 hours a year on it, boy would that be a waste of oil and money to change it summer and winter, when its not needed.
