HI,

I bought some Shell Rotella 15W-40 motor oil today. That is all that is available locally it appears. I mean, I could not find 10W-40...

My Kubota B2910 manual calls for 10W-40.

I am sure I can use the 15W40...down to some temperature. How low can I safely go with the 15W-40???

I bought six gallons at Sam's for something like $34. I have not opened the case, so I could take it back if I had to.

But my guess is that it will be fine to use...

What do you guys think???

Thanks for any and all advice!

Bill in Pgh, PA...

Can I safely use the 15

For some unknown reason, Kubota manuals seem to be dated or perhaps "10W-40" is available in Japan... but never-the-less... the "15W-40" is the predominant unit for diesel engine oil sold in North America...

If you bought this strictly for your Kubota diesel powerplant... for the average person, 6 gallons will last a few years.../w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif, you can purchase Rotella in single gallon units at most Wal-Marts for ~$6.19 /gal. or for an equivalent product you can buy Pennzoil Long-life ~$5.88 /gal...

I agree with John. 15w40 is in probably 90% of tractors. I've never used anything but 15w40. I buy it in 50 gallon drums and use it in everything.

After buying the six gallons of oil, I saw one gallon jugs for sale at the parts store...hummm...same thought popped into my head...six gallons equals how many months? Years?

I could take it back. But I think I will keep it. Don't expect to keep up the current rate of use, but got fifty four hours on the new tractor in the first month. I may decide to change oil more frequently than the manual states.

The Kubota manuals could use some improvement. It took about three readings to understand that they were talking about two filters HYD oil and HST, while refering to one filter.

Replace the trasmission filter really means replace two filters...and recommending oil that is not common in the States is no help either! /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Thanks much for the advice!

50 hours already, Bill?? Wow. I'm not there yet (48) and mine had 30 on it when I bought it! Man, I wish I was retired...

Oh, btw, I got the rears filled. Not too tough, just took kinda long, even using the drill pump.
