What type of oil do you guys use in your JD diesel ...do you use the John Deere brand or something else? I have heard that Shell's Rotella seems to be a good oil for deisels and it can be also used in an ATV.

All my Farmer buddies SWEAR by Shell Rotella, so thats what I run. :D

You shouldn't have any problems with the Rotella. There are better and there are worse but it is the easiest dino oil to find at a reasonable price.

Do you run extended drain intervals with UOA's? If you do there are better oils that will last longer. What type of climate are you in? High heat or extreme cold?

You mentioned use in a ATV. As long as the viscosity is the same as is called for in the ATV it should work fine.

I don't have a degree in the petroleum industry, so we stick with the JD +50 in our tractors. We also have some of our farming community use the Shell Rotella, but they only use it in their older tractors, leakers, and worn out pieces due to Rotella being about the cheapest oil you can buy. We don't buy the cheapest equipment available, so we don't figure to use the cheapest oil available either. Perhaps we could save $100 a year by going with the cheapest oil, but that just doesn't seem to make much sense in the overall scheme of things. We are not much on gambling and, although will cut corners on costs when possible, don't figure cutting costs on engine maintenance is a prudent place to do so.

I use Mobil 1 5w30. Change about every 100 hours or once/year.

Used Mobil 1 in my Benz diesel for 2 years, changing once/yr or about every 6-7k miles. Last time (3rd on synthetic), I switched to Shell synthetic 5w40. Can't find much Mobil 1 10w40. There's some occasional 0w40 that I could use for it. The manual says 10w40 for it. The first Mobil 1 was a 50/50 mix of 15w50 and 5w30 in an attempt to get 10w40. It seemed to use a bit more oil with this blend, not a whole lot, just a bit more than its qt/1000-1500 miles. The 2nd change was some 5w40 "SUV and truck" Mobil 1. Used normal amount of oil with it. Have only added about 1/2 qt so far during the run on Shell synthetic.

Been using Shell Rotella "T" Synthetic 5w-40 in all my diesel equipment ever since I saw the rave reviews it got here. I must say that cold weather startup seems much easier with it than with the 15-40 that was in the 955 (my first diesel powered unit) when I got it. No problems so far, and, it's pretty economical at Wal-Mart. A lot of the oil guru's say it's not a "true" synthetic (it's 'hydro-cracked', do a Google if you've a mind), but, my equipment seems to like it. ;) I change the oil/filter every 100 hours in everything (except the 310D, which goes 250), which, again, a lot of guys say defeats the purpose of using a more expensive oil, but, that's just how I am, I guess.
