I'm new to compacts and diesels. My B7500 lets out a puff of smoke when first started after sitting a while since I purchased in November. It has 850 hrs. It burns clean after that. Tonight I started it for the first time in about a month, temp in Barn about 15* F, and it smoked for a while longer, maybe a minute. Does that sound like a problem? Or normal for cold weather and sitting for a while?

Nope, sounds normal and the colder your engine is the longer it will have visable smoke (until it warms up). Welcome to the wonderful world of diesels! :D

It's the tendency for a diesel to blow white smoke at those temps until the block heats up. Normal operating diesel.......

Diesels require heat to help atomize the fuel into a fine arosol. First thing there isn't much heat yet and the fuel goes out the exhaust unburnt. Looks like bug fog used to look (only much less of it). Modern diesels are so good you only see that for a few seconds in cold weather. The old ones would burble and smoke for quite a bit until warm and happy.

Mine has 5 hours and garage stored, when I first fire it up the entire garage is flooded with smoke to the point where the air almost turns blue!!! She's probably burning a bit of oil during the break in too. I've learned to hightail the tractor out of the garage as soon as she fires or face the wife' wrath as she pokes her head out the house door and yells about the smell! :D After 2 minutes she's fine!

I have 10 hrs on new tractor and I get white smoke for 20 to 30 seconds. I was kind of wondering about the oil consumption during break in. My level has gone down a little on the dip stick.

If you have an engine block heater keep it plugged in to keep the block warm and glow plug it a little longer at start up. The warmer you can get the engine the less start up smoke you should have.
