Yeah, I did check the gas tank cap...it is not plugged. My dad and I took another look at the mower this weekend; while I was walking around pouting about how I couldn't find the problem with the fuel, my dad took off the pre-filter foam wrap for the air filter (which looked totally clean) and rinsed it with water. Absolute mud came out to the surprise of both of us. He rinsed it until it came totally clean and then dried it out and put it back on. He ran the mower hard for close to an hour in all sorts of conditions and it never once surged.

Could it really be this simple ?!?

I have a z445 with the 25 kawasaki and it does the same thing. I have replace the fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, disassembled the carb and cleaned it and nothing seems to fix the problem. I don't suggest taking it to you local john deere dealer unless you can find the problem. I did and it cost me 166.00 to clean the carb with no results.

My 445 will run on the outside cylinder and so far, after a coil swap and carb clean, still have the same problem.JD will get back to me but have no idea what this might be.Was thinking the low compression start for that cylinder may be the issue.Hope to find out soon.

Turns out the seat switch was good on mine. I finally got a Deere guy to come to my house and run it. He ran it for 30 minutes with no problems but he drove like a granny. I got on it and ran it like you run your own machine and it died within minutes. They took it back and finally found a tiny piece of trash in the main jet. I have now mowed for a month with no problems (fingers crossed).

Re: Engine Stall on John Deere EZTrak z445

Hello all,
I'm new here and am asking a similar question for my father-in-law regarding to a 2010 model year John Deere 445 EZ trak Zero-turn riding mower with the Kawasaki engine and a 48-inch deck.
The machine in question has always been pretty reliable (Yes, I live in JD country, lol) but lately even though it is regularly serviced and cared for at a qualified JD outlet has been letting its driver in a pinch. It would run fine all day cutting lawns and suddenly stall and will not re-start. The riding mower has been at JD a number of times with no cure for the problem. What has been replaced recently were the following: pump, filters, gas cap and the fuel tank has also been flushed. All this was done at JD and new OEM factory parts were used.
The problem persists to this day.
An independent repair shop was consulted with no positive results. It will run for hours at a time (in the dealers yard, lol) and stall again when at home or on a customers' lawn.

My question is to the Deere gurus on this forum: Where is the problem here?

The only thing the dealers can do (or did in this case) is write horrendous bills. (My personal opinion, not to be ill-taken)

Surely this is a recurring problem with these machines and has happened to other Deere owners before.

If anyone on here could shed some light on this annoying problem we would really appreciate it.

Otherwise, the mower is a fine machine but we just need to know where to look for the problem. Is it mechanical, electrical, or....??

Thanks to all of you who took the time to read and respond.

Cheers R.

Re: Engine Stall on John Deere EZTrak z445

I have a JD 997 Ztrac with a diesel engine. it was driving me nuts last week when the machine would die with no warning, engine, blades everything like you shut the key off while mowing at 6 or 7 mph. We did the fuel cap thing, cleaned the radiator, cleaned the air filter. Called the Deere dealer for help and he said they never had heard of this problem. As a last resort I pulled the fuel suction hose out of the tank. It was plugged about 3/4 of the way. I cleaned it off and re-inserted the hose into the tank through the bulkhead seal. Runs like a Deere again, no more problems.

The next time the engine dies and won't start, check both spark plugs for a spark. If no spark, you have an electrical problem.
