Thanks for all the responses. I've had the tractor for several years and I've always had to pull the knob to stop it. Maybe I misread the manual but the way I read it says the knob I pull is for starting in cold weather to decompress the engine. I will take a closer look when I can get to the country where the tractor is located.

Trace the pull knob wire to see if goes to the fuel pump (shutoff) or valve cover (compression release)
Also if it's a compression release and you pull it while cranking the behavior should be quite different, turning over smoothly without the typical compression resistance.

I use the knob to start it when it's cold and seems to turn the engine over faster. The manual states to to pull the knob and turn the enginge over for a few seconds and push in to start. I have no problem pulling the knob to stop, I just don't want to mess anything up. This little tractor has done more than it's fair share of heavy/light work. If I ever buy a new one it will be a Kioti.

I've not played with that old a Kioti, but perhaps the shut down is on the throttle, like the older 650 John Deere. On this machine, you simply pushed the throttle past the idle detent and it shut the fuel off at the pump.It sure sounds like the cable he's talking about is a compression release, and if so I wouldn't use it to shut the thing down

Thanks for all the help. I drove to the country today and I'm embarrassed to say there are two knobs. The decompressor is on the lower left and the kill knob, which I always use, is on the right. Again thanks for all the help it steered me in the right direction.
By the way, while the engine was running and I pulled the decompressor knob the engine sounded like crap, that's when I knew I was in the "duh" mode.

For what it is worth,
My Mitsubishi has the shutdown solenoid feature (works just fine) but I also have a spring loaded lever that was safety wired n the relaxed position.
Being curious I cut the wire and behold that is a manual fuel shutoff!
I attached a choke cable to the lever and now have an emergency manual shut off as well.
Quite possible that other brands might also have that feature as there are not all that many injector pump manufacturers.
My guess is that the key shutoff could have been a North American compliance thing.

glad you got it all worked out.

There is a solenoid on KIOTI tractors to shut them down. There are two types. LK's had an external solenoid type with a timer under dash to pull the solenoid for a few seconds to stop/shutdown the engine.

Key switch could be the problem. Remove and replace with new. If it doesn't fix proceed to below.

Go to right side of engine at injection pump, find solenoid, find single wire, unplug, take a jumper wire to 12V+ side of battery and touch (dont hold) to see if it moves. If it doesn't move, solenoid is bad. If it does timer is bad. NOTE: timer went bad for one reason or another. Buy both new timer AND solenoid. It would be bad if you hook up new timer and existing solenoid is drawing to many amps and burns up NEW timer.

Most dealers stock these parts. Call if you cannot find at your local dealer.

The shut down solenoid is not working properly. I'm not sure about your model but mine has a fuse that is tied in to the lights. I broke one of my lights land clearing and shorted out the contacts which blew the fuse and after that the engine would not shut down. I found out the fuse also controlled the shut down solenoid. I repaired the light and replaced the fuse and it is back to normal.
