Well, many John Deere's use Yanmar engines (have for years), and I don't hear of many engine failures, and our old 1990 Yanmar had a great engine in it. I also don't hear about the New Holland or Case machines having any engine problems. I think either engine would be a good choice.

I can't comment on the others, but Yanmar engines have been used in many sail boats over the years, as well as other industrial applications. And, in tractors, of course...
I can solidly attest for Yanmar.

However, I'd try an Internet search on Shibura...see what testimonials you find.

The engines are equal.

Based on your experience maybe ?? I have always heard good things about Yamnar...never heard much about Shibaura at all....nothing bad sticks out in my mind about Shibaura...Like I say I honestly do not know much about Shibaura.....where are Shibaura made ??

I'm gonna venture a guess here.........

I think that was a politicly correct statement, both being equal quality..

I agree that I have never heard anything bad about either. However, I have heard ALOT of good about Yanmar, thats why I bought one. I think if the two are separated in the Gray forum and ask an opinion of each seperatly, you may get better feedback. The search idea on both is a good idea too.

Good luck.

The 3 cyl Yanmar on my 25 hp 1998 JD770 starts on the first crank, always. It is easy to service, at 402 hrs burns no oil whatsoever, runs clean and uses 1/2 - less than 3/4 gallons of fuel an hour. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. JD has used Yanmar engines for a LONG time. They must be reliable or the complaints would have moved them to a different supplier.

Having said that, I know nothing about Shibaura

Shibura has made Ford/NH CUTS for many years. Good machines with a great reputation. Just doesn't receive the attention that Yanmar does, possibly due to less aggressive marketing. I wouldn't be afraid of them...

I believe our Bobcat Trachoe has the shibaura in it. I would have to go out and look for sure but it is ten years old now and has been beaten pretty good and just keeps going. Personally I don't think one is better than the other, but both are great reliable engines.

Shibaura may not be a household name, but I'm sure that you have heard some of these names: Perkins, New Holland, Case IH, and Caterpillar.

Shibaura has had a joint venture with Perkins for years. When Caterpillar purchased Perkins, Shibaura engines entered into the deal. Many smaller Caterpillar products are powered by Shibaura engines.

Fear no Shibaura or Yanmar.

Thats an impressive line up. If Cat uses them they must be good engines.

I have been importing both Shibaura and Yanmar for years. I have always preferred Shibaura for many reasons not just engines. With that said it is more important which model of each brand you’re referring to. They both build a super tractor and a crap tractor. I assume you are buying more than the engine and the engine is almost never the weak link on the import tractors so give me some model #'s to compare.
