What kind of equipment is used to engrave rocks ?...I have seen pictures of rocks etc that are engraved with very detailed images IE. headstones etc. How are these engraved. What kind of equipment do they use ?? The images today are very detailed,it must be computerized engraving. I would like to see some of the tools/equipment used for this kind of engraving.

I can't believe how many times I have a question rattling around in my head, and then someone asks it here. I just saw a house down the road with a name engraved in a rock and was wondering how they did it. It looked perfect too, like it was done with a computer.

It's done with a sandblasting system.

The image or lettering is cut out of a mat with a machine called a plotter, the same thing that cuts out vinyl signs. The mat is called blast resist. Probably the most common product you see done with blast resist and matting is etched glass.

Check out http://www.granitecitytool.com I've found them helpfull.

If I remember right you can first spray the rock with clear coat paint and let it dry real well. This helps make a smoother surface for the transfer and after engraving hit it with solvent to remove excess paint.

I have seen images of people etc that are on headstones/monuments etc that are of almost photographic quality....how do they do this on granite ???

If you are looking for a larger picture than a poloroid you can use my above post without engraving and then just clear coat after b/w only.Color can be done,I have made my own mouse pads with color pictures.

If this is what your looking for let me know,I will find the transfer sheets that can be printed on a cheap printer and then transferred.

I thought you wanted to engrave?
