the site i was thinking of building a pond out of, is actually lower than the creek in some points. when i have somebody excavate the dirt from the upper end i wanted them to place it on the lower end. making the lower end about 20 yards thick, more than enough to drive around and stuff.

If packed with clay in mix, would this work or do i need like concrete and stone dam?

Clay will do the job without any concrete involved. It isn't as simple as just making a pile though. With most dams the excavator will make a "key way" in the center of the dam. By this I mean they dig a trench deeper than the bottom of the pond and fill it with clay in lifts compacting each lift. Once this center portion of the dam is built the slopes off the center are added. Each area is built in lifts and compacted. You will also need to have a drain system installed and an emergency spill way designed into the system.
