I was hired to build 3 entry gates for a customer. I filmed the process to explain my method. Please check it out.

Interesting, thanks.

I also had issues with my Hypertherm when dragging and hanging up. Why does it do that? To have to hover it, makes the process much more difficult.

Hope you painted it. I had a customer where their daughter closed the gate on a landscapers trailer as he was leaving. I repaired it, but dealing with that "garbage" powdercoat wasn't any fun at all.

You didn't mention if the wind stopped, once you got the gates hung. lol

Yes, I painted it. There are no local powdercoat companies with booths big enough to fit a 16+ gate.

Yes, the wind stopped right after I was done :)

Appreciate your gate, and if ya don't mind I'll throw a couple suggestions your way.

Comes to fishmouths you'll pull considerable work time out of the fit using a ball peen hammer, about 2 pound with a short handle and a handle protector instead of grinding. Fitters been doin it such for near 100 years.
Probably won't hurt to mention all hammers in a shop, especially wood handled hammers should be safety pinned.

Second thing I noticed was your great attention to getting the frame squared up and keeping it square. Very nicely done. Problem is with the amount of weight you got horizontal gravity gonna come into play, and sag gonna follow. A little bit of unsquaring that slopes the frame up a couple inches from the hinge side will serve well to overcome what gravity gonna do for you. Generally nobody gonna notice when you hang the gate bu they may note better service life.

For doing the fishmouths on cantilevers, I used a 1.875" hole saw with a drill blank for a stop. It worked out perfect, far better than the plaz guide they were using before. To keep the indents level, I'd tack a scrap piece with some weight on the far side and let gravity level it for me.
We'd always put truss rods in doubles, and long single gates to level them up. Easier to tweak them level onsite with a few turns of a wrench.
When I'd do pickets, I'd jump around skipping several and going side to side. Less distortion that way. One guy in the shop would bore right down the line and warp stuff into rocking chair rails, then spend an hour with the rosebud trying to straighten it.

Thanks for sharing. I have both a swinging and sliding gate on my project list but haven't mustered up the time or courage not to mention they are rightfully low on the priority list when I include my wife's wishes.

Nice job on the gate.

Those ground anchors that were twisted in won't stay put. They will gradually bend until the shaft is in-line with the cable and will need to be retightened frequently for a long time. They need the shaft to be in-line with the cable. Watch to see how the power company puts in their anchors for the poles.

Great job with the gate and the welding.
