EP 00 gear oil or grease

I suspect both are the same - just have to read the fine print. For example, Stens 00 grease is not titled "EP00", but states that it contains EP components on the first bullet item. My '87 Snapper LT16 uses it in it's chain-drive transaxle.

Is it not generally accepted that those gear boxes want hypoid gear oil as used in differentials?

Not sure if this makes any difference but the on line operators manual from the Woods web site states in the spec chart to fill the chain case with .78 quarts of SAE 00 oil but it has an asterisk that references being filled with #00 grease from the factory.

Some guys utilize corn head grease for bush hogs with failing seals...
John Deere corn head grease is an EP 00 grease...
But like Rick said for a chain you don't really need that much protection...
Just an FYI...
I bought a case for around $3 a tube online...
