Equipment rental

Jeez, Bob, if you lived a little closer I'd loan you my rake for a couple of months. I only use it a couple times a year; the rest of the time it sits idle. Ever cross the lake over to Vermont..?

At $72.00 per day, that post hole digger sounds pretty expensive to me. Especially since a top of the line model only costs around $1000.00 If you look around at typical rental prices, figuring that you could rent a $25,000 dollar skid steer for around $250.00 per day (at least around here), that post hole digger should probably rent for around $10.00. If I could get $72.00 per day for my $1000.00 implements (and this assumes that they are renting out top line equipment), I would have an entire field full of $1000.00 implements. This works out to a 275% interest rate on your money, even if the equipment is totally worthless after one year, and by only renting it out one day per week. I think that I am in the wrong business.

rf33,

I would imagine that the cost of renting a piece equipment is based upon the original price, how much the equipment is used, and repair/maintenance costs. A rake is built to take a lot of abuse and has low maintenance. A post hole digger on the other hand is a higher maintenance item due to the gearbox and auger. A sad but true fact is that the renters really don't care about how they use the equipment and are prone to pushing it's capabilities. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Is this a tractor post hole digger? How many posts are you putting in? At 72 bucks a day... you are over half the price of a cheap hand help, and 20 to 30% of a mid grade tractor one... May pay to buy one.

Chris, Thats what I was thinking. I would use it maybe a few times a year if I had one.... well maybe if I had one I could find uses for it!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I need to do about 12 holes to replace a fence at my dad's house, and could use it for planting trees. I have a hand one, but heck...I have a tractor that won't be sore after digging 12 holes like I would be! I might start looking in the papers for a used one.

With all those implements that everybody has laying around that they only use a few times a year, there should be plenty to go around.

All we need to do is organize into regional equipment-sharing co-ops. All it would take would be a good web site directory of who has what where and some scheme for encouraging people to offer their stuff for use.

Maybe TBN could host the site?

I've thought about that before... Same goes for other tools and garden equipment... It seems like such a waste to have all this stuff that just get used once or twice a year!

I also have a lot of equipment. My main reason for have all of it is because I spend more time getting it at a rental place and taking it back. Plus if it is mine I have it when I need it. This is weather I need it for 15 minutes or 15 days.

Machine cost & maintanance aren't the only factors in rental cost. There is time involved with instructing users & handling the rental process. Also liability. A phd can be a dangerous piece of equipment if not used properly. I rent PHD's for $2/hole with or without a tractor with a $50 minimum. Some people are only going to use it once & would much rather rent. If one has a tractor & is going to use it ocassionally purchasing is probably the way to go.

... I rent PHD's for $2/hole ...

Do you have a special "hole counter" mounted...? /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Seriously... how do you determine how many "holes" the rented PHD performed...? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
