Equipment Tie-down

   / Equipment Tie-down #31
Last week we had an unusually warm week here in Northern Vt. On my way home Wed night, I came upon what looked like a brand new Toro Z turn mower, on the side of the road, all smashed to heck. I stopped to look and see what happened, and as I was looking at it, a guy with a pickup and a small trailer drove up and stopped. He had a gawd awful look on his face../w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif.. He had just picked up the mower a few minutes before, and was on his way home - "only a short drive"... when he looked in his rear view mirror only to discover his new mower was gone! Yup, he didn't think he needed to tie it down.... I helped him drag it back onto his trailer, and all the while he get muttering about how he was going to explain this to his wife.. I got some rope out of my truck and offered it to him so he could tie it down to his trailer, and he said "why bother"... and took off. Some folks just don't learn....

Here is a true story with a twist. One of the local Doctors needed a new mower. He had a man who worked for him that said he had a buddy with a practically new mower for sale. Doc bought it, a nice John Deere, 20hp. lawn tractor. Well doc has a cottage down south and took the new tractor down to mow the grass. On the way home he hits a bump, the tractor not tied down, does a swan dive onto the pavement. The tractor sustains major damage and is useless. He took the tractor to a John Deere dealership for repairs. John Deere has a national computer network that they keep on the equipment they sell. When they ran that tractor through their network, the tractor was listed as stolen. The police were summoned, the tractor was confiscated, and Doc was out several thousand dollars. The police interviewed the Doctor and the investigation continued. This was the tip of a multi-state theft ring, who concentrated on compact tractors and construction equipment. Several arrest were made, hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment was recovered. It was a long road to get here but the point is, if the deal is too good to be true, it is. Tie your equipment down and know who you buy your equipment from. Thats my two cents!

Equipment Theft:

Back in the area I grew up in a brand new combine was stolen from a dealers lot. Twenty years later a local farmer was retiring and had an auction sale. Turns out he had stolen the combine when the auctioneering firm did their thing with serial numbers.

Amen to that!

""It's a done-deal! Used the tie-downs and got my mower in for warranty service without any mishaps. Sure am glad it's warranty service and not the kind I have to pay for.
Jerry""
