I've been wanting an equipment trailer for the longest time now but haven't been able to justify the purchase, even though I'm a contractor and can write it off, I haven't really needed to bring my machine on a job.

My machine is a JD 4310 w/ 300cx loader, I do have a 48 back hoe that I use rarely but want to be able to transport machine with BH since I could use it for trenching Drainage lines.

I don't have the exact weight and length now, But in the past I concluded I need a 5 ton, pulling it is not a problem with my 3500 diesel RAM, the issue is 16' vs 18' , I know 18' would make things easier with balancing the load but would 16' suffice. It would only be used occasionally for work, hobby and favors.

If I needed it for work I would not hesitate to go out and buy the latest and greatest, but since it's going to be sitting most of the time, I've been looking for a deal on a used one and have found a 10 year old 16' that the guy says he's gone all through it with new planks, brakes and tires, says everything is good. The brand is Custom and he said he got it with his bobcat from the Bobcat dealer.

I haven't seen it yet but before I go look at it I'd like some opinions, I think most will say go with an 18 footer but this is available for asking price $1800, he said he'll consider an offer, so I'm thinking $1,500-$1,600. Maybe even low ball it and see if he's really anxious to get rid of it at this time of year.

I know if I go look at it I'm gonna fall in love and think it's big enough, like I did with my dump trailer, I had it all planned for over a year I was gonna get a 12' and when I went there they were out of the 12' and only had the 10' rather than wait a month for the bigger one I went with the 10 footer and have been kicking myself since.

Any comments or opinions appreciated.

JB.

Get 18'.. no question... dovetail or otherwise..

i have a 16', and it works.. but when i haul a loader tractor with an implement ont he rear.. having an extra 2' for balancing or carrying more gear would be GREAT!

I say 20' at a minimum. I would never consider anything as short as 16'.

Trailers do seem to hold their value if you decide to trade up down the road.

I got a 16' for my BX24 and its just right for me, but I am not a contractor. I know if I was a contractor and need to carry other stuff as well, I would have gone with a 18 footer at least for bumper pull. Anything bigger I would go with gooseneck trailer. just my 2 cents.:)

I have an 18' and i am happy with it. 18 will be more than fine for your JD. 16 will work to. If you can get a deal on an 18' go for it.

When i first started out i had a 12' and it still worked for me yes with some overhang. but still worked.

Like you say you will use it on occasion so either way you go you will be fine.

Go with the 18. I have a 16 that will haul my Mahindra 3215 and box blade. Has fel also. When I have the rotary cutter on it is a very tight fit and load does not feel as balanced.

Get the 18'. In some states they do not allow things to hang off the back like your Hoe so that could be a issue. I have a 18' and it works great for cars and small tractors but if I have my bushhog on the back it hangs off by a foot.

Couldn't fathom going with a 16'. I run 20 feet (18' with 2' dovetail) and it is comfortably roomy. All I'm towing is a BX2230 and a few implements, depending. I played with marking off what 16' would be like before I bought and I KNOW would not have been NEARLY as happy with my purchase were it that short.

That said, a 20' 10k trailer is no joke. Your tow vehicle is better than mine (tow package equipped Ford Expedition). I get around NO PROBLEM, but I think I'd have a hard time handling any more trailer even with more vehicle. I guess I'd get used to it, but that 20' trailer is certainly long enough for the 'casual' user.
