the wedges were tapered from about an inch down to nothing and they were 12 inch square. they were used to make up the difference between the post height and the mine shaft height. any softer hardwoods was used. the locals would cut the wedges from one foot tree sections we sold them. they used a 3 foot horizontal saw blade with a flippy floppy table. every one of them I met wasa missin fingers.

I'm located in Michigan, don't think they go as far as Connecticut.
They did not want to do mine because it was over an hour drive
but we lined up two other places and greed got the best of them

The reason the paper mills pay more for logs is because they
can control quality. They know exactly what they're getting.
With the chippers they get the tree, the bark an leaves And
Sometime a few trees that are less desirable for pulp then
poplar...

The poplar trees we have could be described as brittle. They
don't stand up to wind or ice very well.. As for using em in
a mine I don't think so. Our poplar if kept dry would last a
hundred years, But put em in contact with the soil or in a
moist place, they will swell up, get spongy an inside of a couple
o years will disappear...
