Hi,

I took delivery of a brand new MF 4707 two days ago. Yesterday, it started showing code “E 31 97” or “E 97 31” (water in the fuel). I called the dealer and they said it is okay to operate. The engine was derated but still enough to do some work. The code went away for a short period while operating only to come back again. At the end of operating a new error code pooped up “t 3 500242” or “t 500242 3”. Anybody know what the second error means?

Thanks!

Not sure of the code but I am surprised the dealer said it was ok to keep running it. I believe I would request someone to come out or take it back if needed.

Yeah that is my plan for tomorrow morning. Just want to make sure there isn’t something I can try first

If it really is water in the fuel use a can of "dry gas" or one of the common diesel additives that removes the water from the fuel and causes it to burn out in normal operation. Being brand new like that you should of course get concurrence from your dealer FIRST before putting anything in it. Also a good time to read the daylights out of your Operators Manual. They did not print that thing just to waste the 30 pages on "safety."

Update, this morning no codes anymore. just turned it on, throttle it up, moved it around a little, and nothing complained

Hey, that's great news. Enjoy the new 4707.

You will find many proponents of various additives commenting once in a while here on TBN. I am no advocate of additives but I do use SeaFoam a few times a year in most of my machines. Another of the most prominent brands is Power Service in white plastic jugs especially in very cold weather to minimize/prevent gel, etc. None necessary, all OK as far as your warrantee, etc.

I am thinking about getting Power Series Clear Diesel just to make sure that the diesel in the tank from the dealer wasn’t like really old and started separating.

False alert… the water in fuel error is back. I will try the Power Series Clear Diesel and see what happens.

I am really starting to think that the diesel is just old and started separating…

Could also be from condensation in the tank from shipping/sitting on the dealer lot with partially filled tank that they (hopefully) topped off when they sold it to you. If it was me, I'd drain the tank & run it through a quick polisher (you can make a cheap diy polisher using a racor filter and electric fuel pump rated for diesel. That'll trap the water in the racor & you can re-use the fuel. You want to be REAL careful about water in diesel ... you'll get algae that will screw up the entire fuel system & water can destroy your injectors. New tractor, so you probably wouldn't want to mess with the warranty by adding the racor yet, but all my equipment has racors plumbed in. Do what you want ... just saying.

I am mostly really annoyed at the fact that my old tractor had a water filter inline that you could drain and now you need to take the replace the entire fuel filter with a special wrench, but that is how it goes these days.
