Does anyone know if you can estimate how heavy a load is based on how high the loader will lift it? For example the LA302 loader is rated for 770 lbs at the pivot point at max height. If I get a big rock in the bucket and at full curl (which puts the weight pretty much right over the pivot point) it can only lift to 3/4 of max height approx how much would the rock weigh? Any guesstimates?

Is it a nice linear power decrease from 1" off the ground to max height, or is it more of a curve?

While the loader is rated for 770 pounds, I would point out that all three major brands, and probably some of the less well known brands, all underrate their FEL capacitys. I think their ratings are more like "at the very least it will lift."

So in fact the rock in question could actually weigh quite a bit more than 770 pounds.

As far as the weight to lift height curve, I do remember a thread in the JD forum about adding weight incrementally to a loader (concrete bags) and seeing how far it could be lifted, but I don't remember anyone doing the chart as a result and seeing if the equasion was linier.

Thanks Cliff, I'll have to try searching for that thread. If it's a linear progression I was thinking this rock might weigh around 900 lbs, it certainly felt like it when I tried (and failed) to roll it into the bucket by hand. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Most loaders have a published lift curve, if not in the consumer specs, maybe in the more detailed specs that the dealer can access.

Courtesy of the changing leverage and angles, the curve for the typical design used on compact tractors has a shape that goes from a maximum lift force at the ground to about half of that at full height.

In other words, the typical design can lift close to double its full height rating maybe a foot or so off of the ground (assuming proper ballasting so it doesn't just pull the back end off the ground).

A first order approximation would be a linear lift curve. If it can lift something halfway, its about halfway between the min and max lift cap of the loader.

What does 900 lbs feel like? How would a person (other than Magnus Samualson) know?

How it feels varies depending on if you're lifting it or it's falling on you. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
