For future reference:
I like the approach of weighing the force on the tow vehicle. But most of us don't have a suitable scale. If you just want to find the COG, you could do this using the springs of your tow vehicle as a scale. With the tractor out, measure the height of some landmark around the hitch ball (I bet a tape measure would be fine). Then pull the tractor in, and, through trial and error, find the tractor location that duplicates the original hitch ball landmark height. At that point, the COG of the tractor will be over the trailer axle or the midpoint of the two trailer axles. Then with that knowledge position the tractor satisfactorily.
