I have Eurocardan PTO shaft connecting my JD and finishing mower. There is a plastic guard over the shaft (bell shaped at the U-Joint ends).
I cannot figure out how to disconnect the shaft. I want to remove the mower deck.
I've felt around under the "bells" for a pin or quick disconnect sleeve to no avail.
Thanks for any assistance!

Is there a collar you can pull back or turn that will allow the shaft to slide off?

What "end" do you want to disconnect...?

If at the tractor PTO end... most Eurocardan yoke's have a "button type plunger" you just depress and the yoke slides off...

At the gearbox/implement end... you should have a shear bolt to remove... and it slides off...

John, on the implement end, with a shear bolt, don't you also have to remove a horseshoe clip, or snap ring, from the end of the input shaft before you can pull the PTO shaft off?

Just curious...Normally there's no need to disconnect the gearbox end of a PTO shaft, correct?

Correct... I just tried to cover all the bases... I really don't know what "end" he's having trouble with...?

Mike, if you have a shear bolt instead of the slip clutch, I think it's a good idea to take the shaft off occasionally and clean it to make sure it hasn't corroded onto the input shaft so it couldn't turn even if the shear bolt sheared. Does that make sense? But of course, I'm saying to do as I say; not as I do; I've never taken any of mine loose at the gearbox; hope they're not corroded on there./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Makes perfect sense as well. Been there! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Roy, the cardan shaft made in Italy disconnects by rotating the knurled collar as opposed to pulling back on the collar. It will be obvious which way to rotate as it will only go one way. It works well and I find it disconnects even easier then the pull collar type. Rat...
