I thought that stuff was called 'coal oil'. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'm beginning to think my terminology is outdated or regional - I learned it from Grandpa who was born in the West in 1875. I think you and Greg are correct in describing modern American usage.

And to the Original Poster: sorry I got this thread so far off track!

Thanks Greg,

Maybe I shouldn't have started this! But (as we say) in for a penny, in for a pound .....

To make matters even worse, the French word 'petrol' (equals US kerosene) is the same word we Brits use for gasoline. Even found a hapless Brit broken down on vacation - he ran out fuel, walked to a service station with a jerrycan and (not speaking much French) asked for 'petrol'. They often sell this in addition to auto fuels, so were not too surprised and obliged him. He walked back to his car, poured it in the tank and wondered why it wouldn't start. Which is when I found him - took a while to figure out he had put kerosene in his tank instead of gasoline, which is 'essence' in French. Ho hum.

It gets worse as you travel east. In Italy he'd have to ask for benzina - which opens up a whole new can of worms when attempting to translate back to (American) English.
