This happened near my work. The truck split in two around a sign. Driver was dui and sent many people into the hospital that are in critical care. Driver died. I drive buy this area every weekday.

Police Investigate Fatal Crash North of Eugene | KEZI

Truck was a 97 F350. I've seen a lot of big trucks around this area (logging, dump trucks, dumb college kids in jacked up pickups) acting like they're immortal. Ironic considering there's a "watch your driving" sign that states such a thing. Something to the effect "No ones immortal, not even you. Watch your speed." It's about 2 miles up the road from the crash.

Wow. Really a shame. I couldn't even make out the truck it was so bad. Shows how fast bad things happen.

Well at least the truck won out over a drunk in a honda civic..

Police say Golz was traveling southbound in the northbound lane in a Honda Civic when he was hit by a Ford F-350.

What a shame. :(...prayers for both families.

Looks like the folks in the truck would probably been DOA if they had also been driving a small vehicle like the drunk driving the civic the wrong way, so I'm not sure if I understand the title of the thread. In some sense the big truck probably did save the couple's lives.

That said, sorry for the families. We have lost family members around the holidays, most recently my Mom a couple of years ago (peacefully and without suffering I am glad to say) and my BIL (father of four young children).

A large vehicle can't save you from your or other peoples stupid. A large number of people believe big vehicles are safer due to their size. In some cases that's true, but I'm always reminded of the anecdote about what's the least least likely vehicle to roll in a crash (at the time it was a Corvette), but what's the most rolled vehicle,The Corvette. Due to the fact of what people do with and to them to make them roll. (ie driving to fast for conditions and not knowing how to drive a high performance vehicle).

So, that idea holds true.

I was mistaken at which vehicle was at fault for the crash. They told us in out morning meeting at work it was the truck. I had skimmed the article already knowing the facts so to speak and missed the reversal of who caused it.

Sorry for your losses. I recently lost a family member too and I can only imagine there's lots of people today worried about the injured people in this crash.

Some people here seem to think their invincable when in their truck? That small car their tai-gating might flip the truck into a nice roll?

4wd pickups used to have the lowest roll over rates when it was farmers, plow operators etc that drove them. Now they are about the highest.

Rolling over, by itself, doesn't kill you. Impacts and getting squished kills you. Doesn't matter if you are right side up or up side down.

Correct about rolling, If you have on the seat belts? i had a very good friend Killed by flopping half out of a Firebird moon-roof...He did not have the belts on?? My cousin was killed in his fullsize truck by being driven into a tree on his side, from an auto impact... So there is no formula to save you from a bad wreck , which is one you cannot walk away from??

I drive by a high crash area often passed a bad roll over SUV yesterday (Jimmy or blazer), and tonight was a (looked like 4 door Chrysler 300 newer car) or perhaps some other midsized car. they spun tearing off about half the front end on some saplings. I71 and SR30

Thinking about, that truck had to have been flying. Avoiding the car or not if he was doing anywhere near the speed limit he wouldn't have crashed that hard. The posted limit is 55, during the day due to congestion you can only do about 45. I've been there off hours before and have seen some low fliers.

Also he crossed a drainage area and large curb not shown in the picture.
