Yes, I remember Joey Chitwood, in fact, I did ride with him on one of his stunts. He did not offer to pay anyone, but offered the ride. I watched them practice during the afternoon prior to the show and he set up the ride for me then announced it just before the stunt (in other words, it was a setup) at the County Fair.
On another occasion, I was driving my mother and some of her friends on a shopping trip. It was a '49 Ford Coupe. Three rather heavy women in the back seat and another in front. The left front wheel bearing froze and twisted the small end of the spindle off and the wheel took off ahead of the car. We were on a curving railroad overpass on the main hi way at the time. I guess the weight in the back seat bottomed the rear springs out. Other than I lost the brakes and would not have known the wheel was gone till we stopped on the shoulder after cleaning the overpass and they got out of the car. Then what was left of the front spindle dropped into the dirt without leaving a skid mark or digging up the dirt.
I guess that was when I was young and invincible.
