That helps prove my point. The big box retailers cut the throats of servicing dealers and the buying public screams & yells when a servicing dealer tells the buyer of a big box OPE item to wait in line when they need warranty work done.

The buying public expects to get it both ways. Doesn't happen often. If Menard's published warranty policy hasn't been violated, the buyer has nobody to blame but himself. As the old saying goes: you pays your money & you takes your chances.

Same deal as the guy who saves $1000 on a new tractor purchased 1500 miles away then can't get immediate warranty work done by the local dealer.

AGREE 100%...you have have a lower price, or pay a premium and have better service, but not both. As I noted in the "Comments" section for the story as published online, we paid Menards $20,000 for a new kitchen and appliances and when they were delivered, one burner on the new $1200 stove did not work. I did not run to the store and demand a new range, because the policy clearly said appliances with a problem were a WARRANTY ISSUE and I was agreeable to that. The person with the no-start mower clearly thinks the store policies does not apply to him. CRYBABY!!!

Murphy 1244...that sounds amazing that Sears would be that gracious about such an issue. A free replacement for a machine that the customer damaged because of carelessness?

Several years ago we came back from a vacation with a foot of snow in our drive. My old rider w/blower chose that day to give up the ghost. I went to Sears and bought a walk behind. The thing was supposedly ready to go, the guy who brought it out of the store said he just test ran it. I brought it home (it was dark), I started it at the end of the driveway and it ran for about five seconds before it seized; no oil. I returned it and they gave me another which we both checked for oil.

We bought an Apple Mac in 1987 from the college's bookstore where my wife was attending. It had a faulty motherboard right out of the box. We took it back to exchange it and they said they don't exchange them but fix them which took about a week. I'm sure something similar would happen with a new car.

I bought a new simplicity rear tine tiller from a local dealer.Gave him $700 cash for it took it home and low and behold he forgot to put oil in the engine, needless to say fired the engine.Took it back to him he stated he put oil in after he checked no oil.He then proceeds to tell me he will fix the engine,I say nay nay,I want my money back.He then tells me I have to wait a week to get my money back because his wife only makes out checks once a week.A $700 check arrived about a week later. What a PIA that was.coobie

That matters how?
Menards is a multi-billion dollar big-box retailer. Stock ownership is irrelevant to this issue.

The second part where the sales receipt tells about how long it is returnable. usually 6 months. I had asked how long ago it was purchased.

Commenting about ownership wasn't thinking some one would look between the lines to find a fault . Trust you have a better day and improved attitude alslo.

You haven't experienced my attitude. I'm pretty certain you wouldn't approve.
Looking between the lines? I was asking what difference it made whether Menards was a publicly traded corporation, or a "private owned by one family business".

The answer for which I am still waiting. For those unfamiliar with the name, Menards is a multi-billion dollar Midwestern home improvement chain similar to Lowe's or Home Depot. Hardly a Mom & Pop hardware store with an Ace or True Value franchise.

As the story here went, the guy tried to return the no-start mower 90 minutes after purchase.

Local service center for Menards expedited his fix, saying it was a "carburetor issue" but the guy is still pissed off at Menards. I say "TUFF SH**" why do you think you deserve special treatment?
