Ever used starting fluid in your truck?

My big old "Yella Fella" starts right up this time of year. In the colder months it needs its morning "cup of coffee", or I can crank until the battery dies, or the cows come home. . .
Newer diesels have glow plugs, and yes, ether can damage those engines.

I've been a diesel mech since I was eighteen (I just retired). Many industrial diesels have a built in cold weater either start. A small spritz of diesel in the intake of a reluctant engine will not harm it. A prolonged spray while the engine runs on either only may. If the engine is equiped with a glow plug system simply don't use it when using either.

I don't think I would use starting fluid on a new fuel injected vehicle (or a diesel with glow plugs). However, I've got a chipper shredder with a Tecumseh 8.5 hp engines that I cannot start cold without starting fluid. I've had it for over 10 years, pretty much completely taken it apart and put it back together, and now I'm resigned to using the ether. When you need it, you need it.

We use starting fluid on a 1998 Chevy van 5.8 gas. It is the only money I want to put into this old rusted out farm truck. The engine is pretty tired but runs fine once it starts.
We did have an incident where a mouse had taken up residence in the air filter and the shot of ether ignited in the filter blowing it apart and away from the truck, making the mouse house history, and creating an awesome flash. Most of the cover was still there so we put it back together and take off the filter, shoot the sterting fluid down the intake and replace the filter assembly (just pressed on) prior to starting. Oh and the protocol includes the person spraying the fluid to step aside.

Used ether on an 84 vw golf diesel. It did not like the cold but a quick shot worked everytime. Ex FIL who was an egg farmer showed me this trick.

I have used it from time to time in the medium duty IH's for a variety of reasons. As a general rule, I go to great lenghts to avoid using it, however, sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

I use the stuff to degrease small parts. It cuts through grime real quickly, it's cheap, and it dries very quickly. Of course you have to be careful not to try and clean an open flame.

I'm not a rubber gloves, goggles and respirator person, but you really shouldn't be using ether for cleaning and degreasing. Brake cleaner is much safer. Even gasoline is safer. Ether is an anaesthetic, toxic and flammable.
