Just saw this tonight. We lost our 11 yr old chocolate lab today. She showed up at our farm pregnant and malnourished. We took her in and she became part of the crew. She was a timid, quiet dog. Very sweet, motherly. I really wish dogs lived longer. You treat a dog right, you have the most loyal friend you will ever have. She will be dearly missed. Love the posts, sorry to dampen the mood.
You have my condolences as well deerejohn; I have also felt the heartbreak of losing my best furry friend.

I understand the story actually originated in the Vedas, or maybe The Upanishad, about 1500 bc. It's an old story.

No doubt that is certainly possible and very likely given the special, long standing relationship between dogs and mankind .

No apologies necessary... most of us here understand what you're going through. They truly are our "best friends"...and deserve to be treated just like our own offspring.
I believe that one of their many purposes is to remind us of our own mortality.

Feel free to share pics and stories if you want...

I know how you feel I just lost my best buddy last month. When he came to us he was 40% underweight, had stress shed his entire undercoat, and was sick to death with lyme and anaplasmosis. We covered him with a flannel blanket so he could be warm enough in a heated house, while we fed him lots of food and antibiotics. Any time we took him somewhere, he expected to be dumped. One of the turning points was when we did a trip to the coast with our 3 other dogs. He started to believe we were a pack. We have 93 acres where he could run, and he loved to take long walks with us, always staying just in sight, but ranging as far out as he could with that restriction.

I have never had a dog that expressed such joy in life. He loved his people, his pack, his runs, swimming, following the tractor, early morning pets, everything. About the first of August I was doing some tractor work and on the way back I drove by the creek so the dogs could get a drink and cool off. He didn't come out of the creek. When I went to find him, he was unable to negotiate the creek bank. I carried him to flat ground, which was tough because he weighed 100 lbs. He was in terrible pain. We actually had to carry him in to the vet on a stretcher. It took a couple of weeks, but the diagnosis was osteosarcoma, a very aggressive and terribly painful bone cancer. Pain meds would not let him move normally. The only choice was to amputate a leg or let him go, so we let him go. I miss him every day.

Thanks everyone for the thoughtful replies. We definitely miss her as she was part of our security crew. The armadillos never had a chance. Her partner in crime, a black newfie/aussie mix is taking it ok. We have been spending time with her, giving her some extra attention. They both roamed our 50 acres together, always bringing back "presents" for us.
