In your opinion what do you consider a good distance and or amount of time to walk for daily exercise to get a good aerobic rhythm ?

Depends on how much uphill involved! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I really don't know but think it will depend on the condition you start with and want to end up with.

A good pysical may be recommended prior to drasticly changing your exertion habits.

Alot depends on your age, present physical condition and previous activity. I am almost 50 and was very active in my younger years, but went for quite a while with almost no physical activity (health reasons) This past year I started walking on a daily basis. Slowly build up to where I could get a good aerobic workout.
My routine is I start walking up to a brisk pace and then when my heart rate reaches around 80 or 90 beats per minute. I continue that pace for about 20 minutes and slow down to cool off for about 10 minutes. Don't have any measured distance to walk. Just judge by my heart rate. This routine has lowered my blood pressure significantly!
Hope that helps

I am 48 and was very active when younger and still active, but I have not been getting the aerobic work out I need, the heart pumping etc. I am 6'1'' about 200lbs and need to get back down to 170 to 180 lbs. I have the high blood pressure and the chloesterol problem. My job would provide me the best oppurtunity to walk, when things are running good I have ample time to walk/climb stairs ladders etc.

I am 71, 240. My doc said I needed to be doing 2 miles/day at 4mph rate. That is rediculous. If my treadmill is accurate, I would almost have to break into a trot to get to 4 mph. I have made 3.4 and that is moving out. Reality is that on the 'mill I can't stand the boredom more than about 20 minutes a shot and I am very lax at even doing that.

Naw - I'm serious about the uphill. It takes alot more effort than on the flat.

Just be sure that you choose a route that is not uphill both ways!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When my dad [b.1915] used to tell me how good l had it as a grade schooler , over what he went through as a child . He always said that when he was a lad , he had to walk 4 miles up hill to school then 4 miles up hill back home . lt was'nt till l was older that l caught on .
As for excercise l've found that going with a friend or my pooch has always made a few miles seem like a short stroll .

On advice from our doctor both the wife and I use now the treadmill 6 days a week. My workout is 30 minutes and I vary the speed between 3 to 3.5 MPH while constantly adjusting the incline. This way the body can't acclimatize to any one given workout scheme from day to day. Doing the exercises 1st thing in the morning gets me moving for the day. Since starting this workout if I watch my diet I normally lose about a pound a week. The way I figure it at that pace in a year and a half I'll be able to fit in a matchbox. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
