With the olvie farm I am getting plenty of excercize. After I quit smoking the one other time in my life I did manage to quit (smoke free close to 3 years now) I bought one of those mineature trampolines. I really enjoyed that for excercize much more than pain walking. When the nicotine craves would hit me I would jump on the mini trampoline. Plus it is a lot easier on the ankles than pavement. I really got my heart rate up on the trampoline. Had to put the trampoline next to a wall so if I lost balance I could push up against the wall.

I really do think excercize is important for your health even more so when you are in your late 40's and +. The trick is to fins a way to get your excercize in a way that you don't hate. Fro me the only way is work. I just was never very good about doing excercize just for excercize. It had to be a fun sport, or work. My admiration to all of you who actually excercize, jsut to work out. Especially those of you who do it first thing int he morning. How you manage to do that I will never never ever understand. But I admire the heck out of you for it.

Seems like everybody's dad back in those day went to that school.
It's a wonder they didn't have to go to school with 5 feet of snow on in July.

That's just because they had to have the summers off, so hey could work in the field 25 hours a day.

I do agree with Egon though, a good uphill hike does much more than flat ground. Especially feeling that right now, as I covered about 4 miles in the woods at work today, then topped it off with a half mile hike to the truck.

The sick part is that I'm now headed out to walk my own lot, and decide what I'm doing this weekend. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My son, Kristian Andrè, and some of his and mine friends have a "walking team west" as they call it, every monday at 8 in the evening they meet for a 2-3 hour walk in the forests around here. Winter, snow, rain, sunlight or winter darkness they will walk, with headlamps if needed. Halfway they stop for coffe and a snack. They are between 5-20 persons every time, come if you can!
They really love the workout and the fun they have on these trips. I havent begun yet, I think I will wait till summer, easier to start then. I attach some pics taken with my sons phone camera.

And that will ruin you. Or at least it's been my downfall. I was 53 and 54 years old when I was doing gas leakage surveys; walking most of the day every day. And I had a lot of fun wearing out some gas company employees who tried to stay with me. We spent 2 days following a 15 mile pipeline through the mountains once and I'd get far enough ahead of the 2 guys with me that I'd sit down and rest while waiting for them to catch up. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And the day I walked 13 miles along a pipeline, one of those 2 guys gave up and quit after about 7 miles and the other made 10 miles before he quit.

Of course now I'm a little older, and I've done almost nothing for exercise the last 3 years and that rented core aerator this morning wore me out in less than 2 hours. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif I don't know if I could make 5 miles anymore.

A little exercise is good for the soul and the body. 6 days a week I go at the treadmill in the basement for 30 minutes. I vary the inclination as well as the speed so as to get a good work-out without the body getting used to the routine. When out in the real world, the rest of the time my butt is in the tractor seat. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Come on Bird; you know it's not the total distance but just one step at a time! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif And they will add up.

It's all about the shoes fitting properly.

Osprey,

Distance and speed are relative terms to your personal condition.

You need to first know your standing heart rate. Take you pulse and determine how many beats per minute your at while at a rest.

This is a very important indicator.

Than walk at a pace that increases your heart rate. It doesn't accomplish much to walk one mile if your heart rate doesn't increase because you are not exerting youself. But if you walk that mile fast enough to force your heart to beat faster, you are now getting a cardio workout.

At the end of your walk, it's important to count your heart rate and then again 15 minutes later. The time it takes to return to normal after exerting yourself is one of the best indicators of progress.

Example:

Standing heart rate is 80 beats per second.

Exersicing your heart rate goes up to 100 beats per minute.

15 minutes later, your heart rate is down to 90 beats per minute.

A month from now, your recovery time will get faster. Hopefully down to your starting rate.

Your goals with these results would be to get your accelerated heart beat higher and your recovery time lower.

Your ultimate goal is to lower your standing heart rate. 60 beats per minute is pretty good. 40 is what the top atheletes are at and isn't realistic, but the stronger your heart, the less it works.

And of course, the biggest secret to any fitness routine is consistancy. It's not as important what you do, but that you do something on a regular basis.

Have fun,
Eddie
