will air in injector lines or pump cause exhaust fumes? or could it be a plugged air filter the fumes are only at high rpms with a miss every so often.

Plugged air or fuel filters can cause rough running and added emissions.

As per manual, if exhaust is black then your air filter is toast & if not replaced may / will start to do engine damage. For different colours of exhaust smoke see attached link.
