i read somewhere that it is illegal, at the federal level, to remove a catalytic converter... my truck has one too... has your truck passed inspections (emissions) since? Thanks for the info. -art

It is a federal offence to remove your cat. On trucks over 8500# though inspections are not necessary, so its a dont do it, but we wont check anyway(for now).. I this is all over the country, maybe wrong.... Another thing most dont realize, the cats have gotten much betterover the years. The actual performance increase is minimal with cat removal. The sound increases so it sounds faster /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif.. When folks remove them they are usually changing other things as well, so they feel a pretty good increase with the combination. In some cases you can actually hurt your perfromance with cat removal, not to mention the pain in the butt of having check ingine lights and codes created by it on a gas burner, plus you have to reinstall it for inspection each year. I wouldnt recomend it, do your homework before you decide though.

Well, the truck weighs 7300#'s, it got 15.5 mpg average stock. It dynoed 354 hp at the wheels with a chip (100 hp) Doing the exhaust, and a fresh air intake it dynoed at 378 hp and I gained 2 mpg. with a new chip "stacked" and "repositioning" the cat I still gained a little over 1 mpg in mixed driving. I have no state inspections to worry about yet, the truck is getting 19.5 average with 24 mpg peaks highway only. It also idles 50 degrees cooler without the cat in its original position. I don't recommend anyone do something that they feel uncomfortable with, sooo I was just answering the gentleman about my happiness with my exhaust system.

A seat from Dodge is outrageously expensive. Try a salvage yard or replacing the foam yourself. Replacing the foam is pretty easy, an auto interior or upholstery shop should be able to get the foam for you.

I completely understand and hope it didnt come accros as my judging you. Since you dont have inspections, it wouldnt be an issue anyhow. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I just wanted to throw that disclaimer out there so he would at least be aware before he modified his truck.

hi all, thanks for the input here...

So... in MA, we have yearly state inspections, which include emissions. My truck GVW is 8800. If I remove the cat, will it effect the ability to pass inspections? If I remove the cat, and it is found out, what do they do? If I go with a performance exhaust, can I make it work with the cat?

sorry for so many questions-- but, for a guy like me, if I do something off the books, I'll get caught. If I didn't have $*** luck, i'd have no luck!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Thanks again. -Art
p.s. I think I'm leaning towards the mbrp exhaust...

No hard feelings at all /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

MBRP does make cat back systems

Most places that do the checks on emissions don't even know that some diesels have cats.

I ...ummmm.. have heard of people having to remove the cat and "cleaning" all the ozone depleting debris from inside of it to make the world a safer place for all. Seems the appearance is stock, and the mileage/power improves too after the "cleaning"

BTW I do not work for or have any interest in MBRP, they have treated me very well, ship VERY fast, and their stuff is always in stock, and they have a lot of options.

Check out riprook exhaust on TDR lots say nice things about his stuff too.

If I had it to do over, 6" chrome stacks turnin day into night /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You would probably be better off looking at your states and county websites to see what they require. If I remember correctly, Mass. is a green state(like California). This would mean that they are allot more restrictive than most other states.

Either way I dont think you'd notice a great difference between a cat back and cat back w/ cat removed..

Does Ma check emissions on the diesel?

Here in Calif, we have the toughest smog laws on the planet, but they do not do emission checks on diesels. Yet...

We do not have yearly safety inspection either. They used to do spot checks back in the 60's/70's; I remember going through it when I was a kid driving with my parents. You'd be driving along, and out of the blue they had these roadside inspections.

I want to open the exhaust on my '01 RAM, but just have'nt gotten to it yet. I am more concerned about that stupid dinger in the truck. Hoonestly, sometimes I want the key in ACC, the door open, and the radio on...

Lots of people will run a tank full of 20% (or higher if available) biodiesel just long enough to pass the inspections if they have removed the cat.

Most any truck can pass running bio since it burns so clean. Pass the inspection then be on your merry way. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
