Expected cost of spare set of 72\" mower blades?

I'm contemplating picking up a spare set so that I can sharpen/balance at my leisure and just swap them out. How much would you expect to pay at the kubota dealer?

How often do you sharpen/balance your blades? On my old Farmall H I would just crawl underneath with an angle grinder once every month and 1/2, but I'm trying to give the bota a little more TLC. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Have a good one,
Dave

Re: Expected cost of spare set of 72\" mower blades?

Hi Dave,

I bought a set for my 72" MMM last year, and I think they were about $15 @. I sharpened mine about 3 times last summer. I usually sharpen them when they get knicked up pretty good. The cutting edge can get pretty dull before they need to be sharpened. Probably the best way to tell if it's time, is to look very carefully at your grass blades after you cut it. If the ends are real ragged, it's because your blades are too dull, and it will cause the grass to dry out quicker, and possibly to kill some of it. The mower blades don't need to be razor sharp to do a good job. You need to balance the blades every time you sharpen them so you don't cause vibrations which can ruin your bearings in your mower deck.

I usually take my deck off, turn it over, clean it and take the blades off with an impact wrench. Then I take them over to the bench vice and sharpen them with a file. That way you don't take so much metal off the blade. Then I stick a round shank screwdriver through the hole in the blade holding the blade parallel to the ground, and wait for the blade to stop moving. If the blade is parallel to the ground, I'm done, if not I take a little metal off the side that is down. Using a file, I rarely have a balance problem. Then I re-install them with a torque wrench. Hope that helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I just bought a set of mulching blades for my 60'' deck this Spring , The cost was $13.55 each plus tax. Maybe this will give you a bit of an idea as to the cost.

hunt a set of gator blades, got a set for my landpride mower this year. they cut a lot better and mulch without the power normally required for mulching blades. got mine from jacksmallengines.com, you may be able to find local. cost for 60" is 13.26 each.
